What is it for you?
FaithView, For Storm Riders:
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings drawn to the brightness of your dawn.”– Isaiah 60: 1-3

Do you still look both ways before crossing the street?
FaithView, For Storm Riders:
“We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”—Hebrews 2:1
The repeated warnings from our parents to look both ways before we crossed the street quickly became redundant to our ears growing up. Continue reading
Pastor Joe & Ana T. celebrate number 26 today.
FaithView, For Storm Riders:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”– Matthew 11:28-30
Sometimes we let the music do too much of the work.
One of my favorite sayings over the years—you may have noticed—is an old line of Steve Martin’s: “This is the type of music that tells me to go out and be somebody!”
You hear some classic rock or NFL Films music, and you are ready to workout and conqueror the world. Hear a romantic song at the right moment, and it will be all the convincing you’ll need to believe you are truly in love.
You hear a great hymn or praise tune while in service, and suddenly you are ready to “Rock your world for Jesus Christ!”
I’m not saying God can’t inspire you through music, but far too often we let the music be the inspiration. We let the music push us into becoming slaves of the melody, chorus and voices.
Problem is the music stops. The song ends. What happens to your inspiration then?
This isn’t a piece about music; I like music, I love music, everything from Abba to Zep (with a lot of Dylan in between), but the motivation in my life has to be something more than juiced emotion.
When I read the scripture above, Jesus is giving a description of himself; “Take my yoke upon you” and “Learn from me”…Then comes the clincher; “…for I am gentle and humble in heart.”
I want to go after God, I want to follow God, but as a man, I find sometimes my initial instincts are all wrong.
Still, to this day when I read the account of Peter lopping off the ear of the temple guard when they come to arrest Jesus, I like it.
Pro-active, practical, draw the sword and kill the bad guy. Let raw emotion come in and do its work. Hooray, hooray, hooray!
Jesus, of course, rebukes Peter because he is gentle and humble in heart…And we are to learn from him.
I/we/you all need to draw closer to God daily. We always need to move closer to him, take his direction, follow the way he has set for us to go, but emotion will only take us so far.
The practical will only take us so far.
Do you get cranky when you’re tired? (I hate the word, “cranky”) Better, are you a jerk when you’re tired?
Would Jesus ask us to learn from him something we were incapable of? Absolutely not. He calls for us to have the gentle and humble heart because he knows it is the best way for us.
It is the best way to share his Gospel, and it is the best way for us to live our lives. It’s an issuance of peace for our souls.
To do the opposite is to go against the grain. To go a direction in attitude and life that he doesn’t want us to go.
So we become tired in this world. We become overwhelmed by this world; we become cranky, we become jerks.
But… In him, we find rest for our souls.
Are you a different person when you’re rested? Do you smile a little more? Is gentleness easier to demonstrate?
We don’t always have to look for the music. We don’t always have to look for the emotional. We don’t always have to assume the practical is what the Lord wishes.
It’s the non-practical God wants from us; the ability to love when we are being hated, the ability to have faith when it doesn’t make sense and to forgive when it feels better to be angry.
Also the ability to serve unconditionally even when we don’t hear the music.
Boom!
