Let me check this real quick…Okay…Got it…

The Trinity is composed of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Trinity…Trinity means three…Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

I’m good with that…Are you good with that? I think it works now, it worked before, and it will continue to work going forward. Amen, hallelujah, …Preach it, brother!

The struggle comes when we attempt to add a fourth into a mix built for three.

What do I mean?

What I mean is often we delude ourselves, as do many other brothers and sisters in the Lord, with the notion that some among us are very special. (As if to say in Orwellian terms: “More Special”) And without official declaration, we casually insert these “heroes” into that great Power of Three…We add a fourth person to the Trinity.

In short, we suffer from favoring what is part of creation instead of the Creator.

When I was a young youth pastor any time a ministry group wanted to sell curriculum, a mission trip, a concert, or tee shirts the image of youth ministry sage, Jim Burns’ bald head would appear somewhere in the promo or the on the flyer.

“Oh if Jim Burns endorses is involved it must be great…”

It was nothing new…a generation before it was all about Pat Boone…

Now we may be a little more dignified, but we still nominate people for the fourth spot. Everyone from Joel Osteen, John MacArthur, Billy Graham, the General Superintendents of the Nazarene Church, to a professor, to a mentor…to Tony Campolo.

I’m not denying or attempting to tackle anyone’s walk with God. All of the above are great guys…but please…these are just guys…they will age, they will commit gaffes, their bones will grow brittle, they will go bald, and eventually, they will die.

What is that to you? What is that to any of us?

Other than the graduation of another believer to the Lord and the sorrow of departure, what is that to us?

In the last few years, I’ve really backed off of reading Christian literature. I haven’t backed off from reading the Bible…but I have backed off from those who write books (well intended, no doubts about that) telling me what the Bible says.

Because when these folks shine a little light on a verse when they wonderfully highlight a verse, I believe our natural inclination is to be drawn to them…not to the scriptures and the author thereof.

Soon we find ourselves in a pattern of constant curiousness as to what this person or that person may think on a particular stretch of scripture.

Do you know why the Trinity is perfect with three? It’s perfect because it doesn’t need a fourth. It doesn’t need a Graham, a Dobson, a Lucado, or a MacArthur… What we think man can provide for us, the Holy Spirit is already willing and able to do.

Studying your Bible does not come back void, and we know when we are earnestly seeking, the Holy Spirit will reveal truth.

Am I advocating no further study, no further growth? Absolutely not, but I will tell you this, you/we/I must become so familiar with the scriptures and the prodding of the Holy Spirit that we will have the ability to discern the ‘smart guy’ books, and defend our hearts from becoming advocators of mere men and their opinions. Instead, we should be rushing and trusting headlong into a deeper faith in Jesus Christ.

We don’t need a fourth member of the Trinity…the three we have do just fine.
