“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has ben crucified to me, and I to the world.”—Galatians 6:14
It’s tough living in a culture perpetually insisting us to express ourselves, to Just Do It and thump our chests. It’s a fine line between appropriate pride and too much pride. The other part of that is we may not be overly prideful on something, but we might be giving the impression that we are.
(Example: We post great pics of our kids because we are rightfully/justifiably proud of them…But someone else might take it that you’re showing how great your kid is while implying what a “loser” their child is at the same time…And it was never your intention.)
So how do we avoid these things or at the very least limit our chest thumping or perceived chest thumping?…(Ready for the cliche?)…We avoid them through daily surrender to Christ…We lower the risk of them by boasting in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When we boast about the cross of Christ and live our lives with the focus of the empty tomb—our friends/family (hesitant to say the world) will give us the benefit of the doubt if, in any way, we come across as conceited or arrogant.
(Benefit Of The Doubt: When giving someone the benefit of the doubt, you are believing what they say and taking their word because you, yourself, have some doubt about what happened…but know the character of the individual you are giving it to.)
No one wants to live in a bubble; no one wants to live in a world where perception is regarded as truth…But too bad! This is the world we live in.
Perception is truth (cliche) we get that…The harder one to deal with as a believer is that we live in a bubble or an aquarium where someone is always looking at us and tapping the glass to instigate a reaction.
If you haven’t sensed that yet, then you need to start walking closer to the Lord. The closer you walk with the Lord, the more you are going to shine; the more you shine, the more the world will take notice, and the more the world takes notice of you, the more inclined it becomes to get a reaction out of you.
As believers, we are the square peg up against a round hole…And we will always be as long as we are drawing breath in this life. Do you get that? Good, now accept it.
So how do we have victory over pride and people tapping the glass, ready to audit our every reaction?
We boast about the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. If we keep Christ front and center in our thoughts and focus, we will win the day. If we keep Christ and his cross on full display in our lives, then we will be beyond reproach when the world brings its accusations—when it taps the glass.
Word of Warning: Boasting about the cross of Christ shouldn’t only be a game plan. As we consider all that we’ve been blessed with—our salvation/hope/joy—boasting about the cross of Christ should be our way of life.
