“The Lord thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the Lord is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?”—Joel 2:11
Thunder? Power beyond us. Awesome
Forces beyond number? Makes complete sense when we are talking about an eternal creator God.
His day will be frightening for those who stand against him, and they will not be able to endure it. For sure.
But take another look at that line; “…mighty are those who obey his command.”
Mighty are those who obey the Lord…Mighty are those who obey the Lord!
This dispels the notion that if we obey/submit to the Lord that somehow we become something less. That, somehow, by linking ourselves to him we are limiting our ability to dream, express and be everything we can be.
The Scripture above counters that argument. What it affirms is that when we are obedient to the Lord, we become mighty. We become powerful, strong.
Ever had a time in your life when you felt supreme confidence? It’s rare, I agree, but on occasion, it does happen. A moment arrives where we understand a situation completely. And not only do we understand a situation completely but the power to control it is in our hands…It breeds exceptional confidence. When we are living right with the Lord–remaining obedient to him–this is what we become. I believe the world takes notice and I also believe that the demons fear us.
That’s powerful.
There’s no boot camp to go to…No weights to lift…No tests to take…No uniform to put on…We become mighty when we are obedient to the Creator of the universe. I’m not making this up; it’s what the Scripture says. Hallelujah!
So we are clear on what obedience produces in our lives…Do we need to go into what disobedience produces in our lives?
Besides frustrations, struggles and disappointments…What else is there?
Well, have you ever had a time in your life when you felt zero confidence? When you felt small, powerless and insignificant? It happens, I agree…probably more than we want it to.
I’ve found that when I trace back for reasons why I don’t feel powerful but instead weak and failing it is when I am disobedient.
And be clear…we don’t stumble into disobedience. We don’t accidently step into disobedience or trip into disobedience…We choose to be disobedient…And when we are disobedient—after a brief moment of satisfaction—weakness will begin to set in.
Look to the Scripture…Choose to be strong by simple obedience.
Boom!
