FaithView, For Storm Riders:
“‘…I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,’ declares the Lord.”—Jeremiah 15:20

The Lord in this passage is telling Jeremiah not to fret about preaching/speaking truth. It’s a great verse with rescue and being saved; it even has a part in there about not being overcome.

Awesome.

But look at that first line, again. “I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze.”

That…Is even more awesome!

We live–rightly so–as believers putting our faith in the Lord and trusting that he is always going to be there for us. He’s going to lead us in the right direction; he’s going to give us the words to say, he’s going to be with us when we’re afraid.

It’s beautiful.

But do we have the faith—or faith enough—to believe we are strong? Not strong because we workout or because our friends and family stand with us but because the Lord himself will make us strong enough to stand with him? Us and the Lord alone, do we have faith in that?

Jeremiah has a lousy job. He’s sharing truth with a “stiff-necked” too-full-of-themselves people who don’t want to hear anything the Lord wants him to say. An old joke is that Jonah—the prophet that ran away from God and ended up inside of a fish—was a more effective speaker than Jeremiah because it only took him four chapters to get the great city of Nineveh to repent. Jeremiah couldn’t get Judah to change its mind over the course of 52 chapters.

That’s how brutal Jeremiah’s job was. However, in the midst of that arduous task the Lord tells his prophet that he will be a wall of bronze. He will be strong.

We are not facing what Jeremiah faced, but the Lord will be no less faithful when we live and shine for him. He will make us strong. Not a spiritual bully, not a spiritual know-it-all, not a pseudo-spiritual Pharisee practicing the fine arts of Churchianity.

He’ll make us strong, humble and gracious to all people but mighty when it comes to testifying to the truth of his Word.

You ever been around somebody who is spiritually strong? Not just solid, but strong? I’ve met a few and when they entered a room—without a word or introduction—they took control of it. They don’t come across as arrogant but confident. They live in the strength of the Lord.

How about you? How about me? Do we live in the strength of the Lord, or do we rest solely in the trust that he will rescue and save us?

We’re not wrong for believing that…But we’re wrong if we believe that is all he is. We’re wrong when we don’t exercise all the authority he grants us. We struggle with the confidence to believe that…But that confidence—that seems so outreach for us mere mortal believers—begins to build every time we say, “Yes” to the Lord.

How does the old prayer chorus go? Oh yeah…

“Yes, Lord yes, to your will and to your way. I’ll say, yes, Lord yes, I will trust you and obey. When you’re Spirit speaks to me, with my whole heart I’ll agree, and my answer will be, yes, Lord yes.”

…And your strength will grow.

Boom!
