FaithView, For Storm Riders:
“‘They will fight against you but will not overcome you. For I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.”—Jeremiah 1:19
This passage is from the Old Testament. It’s from Jeremiah. It’s probably a warning about Babylonians, Assyrians, Soviets, Communists or Lawyers attacking Jerusalem and the prophet is telling everyone to stand firm.
That might sound familiar but…BEEP…Sorry Hans, wrong guess!
This passage from Jeremiah is the Lord, himself, speaking to Jeremiah. He’s telling him he’s got his back not against all the bad guys listed in the first paragraph but against his own people. The Lord is telling Jeremiah that the people of Israel/Judah are going to fight against him.
Ever been alone on an island? Ever felt isolated? Ever felt all by yourself not just in the physical sense but in the sense of like-mindedness and values?
Welcome to Jeremiah’s world.
I’ve often argued that the first mistake we make in church work—after somebody has come to Christ—is that we’re very slow on telling them what to expect. We don’t share with people that there will be a new awkwardness when in familiar situations. The things you are used to doing will be questioned—not by the Pastor or the denomination but—by the Holy Spirit.
Family will look at you strange. You’ll be the freak. You’ll be the “Holy Roller.” You’ll be the one that got brain-washed by the church. And that very well could/can/possibly be the opinion of the people that love you.
On the other side is the society and culture that will want nothing to do with you because you have declared for Christ.
Look to the Scripture above. Not what Jeremiah says, but what the Lord says to Jeremiah.
“They will fight against you…” Reminds us of John 16:33 when Jesus tells his disciples that in the world they will have trouble. This is where our follow up with new believers and reminders to long time believers needs to be clear. We will have trouble in this world when we proclaim that we belong to Christ. No one should be surprised about this. We fail as a church when people, who are part of this body, are unaware that the world—often in the guise of those that we love—will hit us hard.
We also fail if we don’t preach/teach to everyone we will not be overcome (John 16:33) if we remain faithful. For the Lord himself says to Jeremiah—and to us—that he will rescue him. Rescue us!
When this concept became clear to me—in regards to my faith—I never again felt alone. I might still be on that island, but I like the peace of that island. I might be isolated but some of my best times with the creator of the universe come when I feel isolated.
I’m blessed to have people in my life who affirm and share this same faith in Christ…But I don’t need them to be blessed, strengthened and victorious in living this faith in Christ.
The old saying goes, “love is sufficient unto love.” That may be so, but Christ is sufficient for life and life abundantly.
