FaithView, For Storm Riders:
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”—Colossians 3:2-3

Of course, the extreme of this Scripture is the cliche of being “so heavenly minded; you’re no earthly good.”

The other extreme, the extreme Paul is warning about, is to grow up. There was nothing required of you to come to Christ—nothing but repentance and a confession of faith—however, at some point we all have to grow up. We have to mature and take our eyes off earthly things—ourselves.

This is the guard against getting saved and never moving forward. Never advancing and always letting others carry you along. This means when someone from behind the pulpit promotes a thought or write’s a book or develops a new theory or cause, you just go along with it because it sounds good. Or, better, because it sounds holy.

This happens when prayer life is indifferent, Bible study is optional and church becomes an uninspired, cross off the checklist, routine.

So the question begs, what’s the point of the Christian life if it never changes us?

The call is for us to set our minds on things above and not on earthly things. We’ll convince ourselves that our good works are all heavenly minded but sometimes, quite often, our works are about us only. About the good they make us feel, and that is earthly.

Setting our minds on heavenly things brings conviction about what the Lord would like to prune from our lives. Not what the pastor says, not what the denomination says, but what the Holy Spirit says and the Scripture confirms. Like beginning an exercise routine, this is difficult, this is painful but ever so important to our spiritual life and growth.

When I study myself in the mirror, I do see but a poor reflection. I see only what I want to see. Yet, when I look to the Lord, his light shines on all of my flaws and provides an avenue for me to shed them…and the opportunity to become so much more.

Boom!
