Scripture For The Day:
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”—1 Corinthians 1:18
I’ve been called brainwashed…a Holy Roller…and ignorant in regards to the faith I follow. I’ve been called other things, but they are best left unsaid here.
Haven’t we all been called a fool for having faith in Christ? Haven’t we all seen eyes roll when we share the reason for the hope we have?
Our initial reaction—I know mine was—was to pop the mockers right back. Hit them with something that stung, burned and humiliated. Some of us can be pretty good at that, and the individuals receiving our push back definitely deserve it.
Hooray! We got them…
…But, in the end, we have to recognize that they don’t get it. There is nothing in this passage that calls us to go after these people to settle scores. The reason is simple; they don’t get it. It is foolishness to them.
Yes, as a believer you will have to eat a lot of garbage, but could you imagine dying for somebody who didn’t deserve it? Could you imagine dying for somebody who wasn’t grateful? Is this not what Christ did?
The world doesn’t get it.
But we do get—understand—the power of the cross. We understand what we were and the life we’ve been brought into. We understand the power of the empty tomb enables us to eat a lot of garbage and to let slide the hurtful insults…To love when mocked…Even to love when hated.
I recognize the instinct to want to trade punches…And you should defend the scriptures, defend the resurrection, defend the power of the blood and the hope you have…But if they are making fun of you…Calling you names…Laughing at you…Let it go…Trading verbal blows can lead to cheap victories…Cheap victories that will never change the course of someone’s life.
Take the mocking, and after a while, even the insults will cease to be insults because of the power of the Lord in our life.
Boom!
