Scripture For The Day:
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”—2 Timothy 1:6-7

Nice passage of scripture, Paul is encouraging Timothy. Serving God is not about timidity, you have the power of spirit and love…Awesome…But…that last line…that last stretch of words,“…and of self-discipline” often gets overlooked.

We like love; we like power, we like overcoming timidity…but self-discipline requires real work. If you/we really desire to “fan into flame” what God has given us, then we need self-discipline. It’s old hat for us to hear, but discipline does call for us to be reminded over and over again to be in our Bibles, to have an active prayer life and to not forsake meeting with other believers.

If your Bible time does not involve a reading plan—and you just open and read here and there—then you have no discipline.

If your prayer time is consistently pinned to the time you are stuck in traffic on the 405…then you have no discipline.

If your fellowship time with other believers comes after you’ve made all of your weekend activity choices–If it comes about in a “Yeah, I’m free this Sunday” manner–then you have no discipline.

…So when your walk with the Lord fails to fan into flame…you shouldn’t be surprised because you haven’t done the work of disciplining yourself to bring it about.

Boom!

larryA Thought From Larry Marak:
One of the reasons why it pays to read your way through the Old Testament. In Deuteronomy, the Israelites are instructed to swear by God’s name. In Matthew 5:34-35, the Lord tells us not to swear by his name, or by heaven, or by Jerusalem. Seems like a conflict.

As we read through Judges, Jephthah’s sacrifice of his daughter, and Samuel and Kings we see how swearing by God’s name is repeatedly used as a tool to commit evil or as a semantic tool to excuse evil (David instructing Solomon to murder Shimei son of Gera (1 Kings 2:8).

Men and the Devil had turned an instruction to be honest in God’s presence into a tool for justifying evil behavior.
