Scripture For The Day:
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”—Hebrews 10:24-25
You can have a lot of fun with a discussion about what “Day” the writer is talking about. You can also take this scripture, with a few others in the New Testament, and put together a solid message on church attendance.
But the idea batting leadoff—And let us consider how we may spur one another on…—that often gets overlooked. This goes back to the thermostat versus thermometer argument and which one you are.
In a world where everyone is a politician and way too caught up in politics, way too caught up in entertainment, way too caught up in the pursuit of their own dreams, goals and desires, the leadoff idea in this passage asks us to think of other people.
If truly desiring to live out our faith what effect do we have on those we rub elbows with every day? Are we presenting something of Christ? Something of the Gospel? Something of scripture? Or are we falling into the same traps of politics, entertainment and personal edification?
Often forgotten is, as believers, we are the differences makers. We bring Christ into every situation, and we have the ability to encourage and spur one another on. We carry with us the perfect fit, the perfect puzzle piece, everyone has in terms of a spiritual void.
In other words, we are the thermostat, we have the ability to set the temperature, to better the mood, to bring about a better day.
